Attending

The Conference will take place in Alghero, Sardinia, Italy from June 22 to June 27, 2020.

Alghero is a unique city on the Sardinian island. It is culturally linked to the Catalan speaking-geographic area (Catalunya, Andorra, Perpignan, and the Balearic Islands). Its long Catalan connection – Alghero was conquered by Aragon in 1353 – it is still alive in its popular culture, the local language and its architecture. Nonetheless, it represents a part of the ancient Sardinian cultural landscape: in fact, the city is surrounded by many signs of the ancient “Nuragic Culture.”

Fees

We have endeavoured to guarantee the highest quality standards at minimum cost. Hence, we took into consideration the suggestions received during the last conference;  that we needed to facilitate and encourage scholars from countries with a lower per capita gross domestic product. For EASTA 2020 and beyond, we have developed a more equitable conference fee structure, with a discount system based on the gross domestic product per capita (based on 2018 World Development Indicators published by the International Monetary Fund).

LOCATION

The city

Alghero is a unique city on the Sardinian island, which is culturally linked to the Catalan speaking-geographic area (Catalunya, Andorra, Perpignan, and the Balearic Islands).

Alghero has been cooperating with the Catalan government for many years and has recently developed a cooperation project (“Senyal del Judici”) with some major partners in the Catalan-speaking geographic area. Both the cities of Alghero and Mallorca have been recently working on “smart tourism issues” with the aim of increasing the quality of tourism and the revitalization of the local economy. In order to achieve this goal, Alghero has designed the “Smart Tourism Destination” project, and Mallorca’s Government has designed the “Smart Mallorca” project. Both projects promote the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in order to improve the touristic offer, the services for citizens, the sustainability of resources and the contact between the society and the government.

The island

Sardinia (Italy), set in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, together with its twin island Corsica (France) and the Balearic Islands (Spain), represents a crossroads of culture from ancient times. The North African cultures of the past, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Spanish and Catalan Reigns: every subsequent culture has left some everlasting signs on Sardinian landscape, local language, and the way of living.

Nowadays, Sardinia has become one of the most important tourist destinations in Europe and the World, thanks to its unique mixture of the natural landscape – both seaside and mountain – top tourist-services and the authentic warm, friendly and welcoming attitude of its inhabitants.

In Sardinia, in recent years, sustainability awareness has clearly increased, and “green” approaches to tourism have emerged, reaching new tourism target groups. Over the last decade, digital tourism and “smart” approaches have revolutionised the tourism industry on the island and has started to re-design the way, in which cultural and historical heritage is experienced by the tourists.

VENUE

Italy is well connected to the rest of the world via air, as well as by land and sea. Sardinia benefits from good transport connections by ferry with Italy and both Spain and France.

The Sardinian airport system has many connections to the National airport system and the most important aviation hubs in Europe (Milan, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, London, Frankfurt, Berlin, and Paris).

There are three international airports in Sardinia: Alghero (AHO), in the north-west side, Olbia (OLB) in the north-east side and Cagliari (CAG) in the south.

All three airports are connected all through the yearwith Rome and Milan (and minor Italian airports like Bologna, Bergamo, Verona etc.) and seasonally with many airports in Europe through “low cost” companies and flights. The month of June is a convenient time to come to Sardinia: there are plenty of “low cost” flights from every corner of Europe, but flight routes and timetables change from year to year.

WHAT’S THE BEST SARDINIAN AIRPORT FOR ME TO USE?

Alghero international Airport(AHO)is located just 9 Km north of the city centre, therefore is the easiest solution for getting into town, although both the airports of Olbia and Cagliari are well connected to Alghero and Sassari (the biggest city in north Sardinia) by train and bus.

The shuttle-bus between Alghero international Airport and the town stops right outside the main terminal building. There is a bus to the city centre up to every 30 minutes throughout Monday to Sunday during the day time.

Taxis are available 24 hours a day to any destination. The airport is about 20 minutes’ drive from Alghero city centre. The taxi rank is located at the front of the terminal building.

Olbia international Airport (OLB)is located in the north east side of Sardinia, at about 137 Km from Alghero. You can get to Alghero from Olbia both by train and by bus. You can also hire a car at the airport.

  • BY BUS:Alghero can be easily reached in about two and a half hours by bus from the airport of Olbia.

For more information and updated timetables please click here:https://www.geasar.it/en/how-to-get-here/by-bus#da_olbia

  • BY TRAIN:You can get to the train station in Olbia from the airport in about 10 minutes by city bus. Here you can buy a train ticket and get to Sassari (the main city near Alghero) in about two hours. From Sassari to Alghero is about 30 minutes journey by bus or train. Please notice that you have to find a suitable connection from Olbia to Sassari and then to Alghero if you want to travel by train.

TRAIN ROUTE: from OLBIA to SASSARI àfrom SASSARI (by train/bus) to ALGHERO

Cagliari international Airport (CAG)is located in the south of Sardinia, at about 248 Km from Alghero. You can get to Alghero from Cagliari by train or hiring “a car with driver” (a “private hire multiple bus”). You can also hire a car at the airport.

  • BY “CAR WITH DRIVER”:Sassari (the main city near Alghero) can be reached in two and a half hours by this “private hire multiple bus” from the city center of Cagliari (located about 8 Kms from the airport, about half an hour by bus, train or taxi). Please notice that you have to find a suitable connection from Cagliari to Sassari and then to Alghero if you want to travel by “car with driver”.
